Ashford Dental Centre 23 Tooth whitening
Teeth whitening can be part of an overall smile makeover process.

The procedure can be used to change the color of your teeth and whiten your smile. Of course, everybody tends to respond differently to whitening so our Doctors conduct a thorough analysis of your tooth structure before recommending whitening.

We will advise you of how much improvement you can expect to get from the whitening procedure based on our vast experience.

There are 2 ways of conducting the whitening procedure. The first is in our clinic, or chairside whitening. The entire process takes approximately one hour and you will see the effects immediately.

The second way is via a take home whitening kit. We provide you with a custom made whitening tray which fits snuggly around your teeth. We will provide you with a whitening agent and show you how to apply it.

The effects are normally seen within 1-2 weeks.

Our Doctors will always advise you of which procedure suits you best.

How exactly does whitening work?

All whitening systems reply on an active whitening or “bleaching” agent. In most cases this is hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. At Ashford we also have non peroxide alternatives.

The application of these agents unto your tooth surface allows it to permeate through the enamel (the outer layer of the tooth). It then gets into the dentine (the inner layer of the tooth, right under the enamel). Here, it stimulates decolourisation and makes your enamel shade whiter and brighter.

Why does the in-chair whitening work faster?

In chair Zoom! Whitening works almost instantly because the active whitening agent is activated with a curing light. The light stimulates the gel which results in an immediate effect.

Is it painful?

Both in chair whitening and take-home kits will result in short term sensitivity of your teeth. The reason for this is because the gel penetrates the enamel and gets into the inner layer of the tooth. This can cause sensitivity in most patients.

However, the sensitivity is merely transient. It normally lasts a few hours at the most.

At Ashford we use desensitizing paste and gels on your teeth during and after the procedure to ensure minimal discomfort for you.

Does it harm my teeth?

Whitening is not harmful at all to your teeth. However, in certain situations you may not get the desired effect because of the specific nature of your tooth. The success of whitening is highly dependent on what your existing tooth enamel is like. This is why it is very important to have your teeth thoroughly inspected and checked by us before proceeding with whitening treatment.

We will always advise you if tooth whitening is right for you and exactly what kind of result to expect.

How long will it last?

In most cases teeth will remain in their whitened state for more than 12-18 months before they need to be re-whitened. This is usually done using a take home kit. It is, in most cases unnecessary to do an in-chair whitening more than once in that time frame.

But how long teeth stay white depends a lot on your lifestyle and diet too. Consuming coffee, tea, wine, dark foods and lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption can increase the rate at which teeth discolour.
