Step 1: Consultation
It begins with a thorough consultation where we ascertain whether or not you will need a graft. This involves

- a clinical examination of the site of the intended bone graft
- a panoramic X-Ray
- cone beam computed tomography
For whatever reason the graft is needed (be it prior to placing a dental implant or to treat severe gum disease) it is always done under local anaesthesia and the entire procedure is painless. The procedure can also be done under intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia.
Step 2: Surgery
The graft material is placed in its desired location. It is manipulated to fit the area and around it (depending on what the graft is being used for). Grafts can be held in place using a mesh or pins. In certain cases, we will use a resorbable membrane to cover the graft and affected area. The membrane ensures that nothing interrupts the formation of new bone around the graft site. The entire area is then closed and sealed up to allow for optimal healing.
