What Are Dental Braces?

Dental braces are orthodontic appliances designed to gradually shift the position of your teeth over time, leading to proper alignment and bite correction. Our clinic offers different types of braces, including metallic dental braces, ceramic dental braces, and C-Fast braces. Each type offers unique benefits, and our orthodontic specialists in Singapore will work with you to determine the best option based on your needs and preferences.

How Dental Braces Can Transform Your Smile

Dental braces have the remarkable ability to transform your smile, creating a positive impact on your appearance and self-confidence. By gradually shifting the position of your teeth, braces align them into a harmonious and attractive arrangement. Crooked teeth become straight, spacing issues are resolved, and bite irregularities are corrected. As a result, your smile becomes more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing. The transformation extends beyond the physical aspect; with improved self-esteem, you’ll find yourself more at ease in social interactions and relationships. Dental braces offer a life-changing journey, giving you the radiant and confident smile you’ve always desired.

Possible Risks of Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is generally safe and well-tolerated, but as with any medical procedure, there may be some potential risks. It’s important to be aware of these risks and take appropriate measures to minimise them.

1. Toothache And Mild Discomfort

During the initial stages of orthodontic treatment, you may experience some mild discomfort as your mouth adjusts to the braces and your teeth begin to shift. This discomfort is normal and varies from person to person. Over-the-counter pain relief can help alleviate any discomfort during this time.

2. Scratches And Ulcers

Wearing braces, especially in the initial phase, may cause small scratches and ulcers on the inside of your mouth. This discomfort is temporary and typically resolves within a few days as your mouth gets accustomed to the braces’ shape. Using orthodontic wax can provide immediate relief and protect your mouth during this period.

3. Gum Infection

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gum infections and gingivitis, which may slow down your treatment progress. Regular professional dental cleanings and adhering to your orthodontist’s guidance can help prevent gum infections and support the success of your braces treatment.

4. Enamel Demineralisation

Enamel demineralisation, or the wearing away of tooth enamel, can occur with fixed orthodontic appliances like braces. It is primarily caused by sugary foods and beverages, which initiate a decay process on the enamel. To reduce the risk of demineralisation, avoid sugary items, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and use fluoride moutwash regularly.

5. Root Shortening

In rare cases, some patients may experience root shortening during orthodontic treatment. While generally not significant, root shortening may occasionally affect the longevity of a tooth. However, the vast majority of patients do not experience this issue, and your orthodontist will regularly monitor your teeth for any signs of concern.

6. Tooth Vitality

In rare instances, orthodontic treatment may exacerbate pre-existing dental conditions, such as trauma or decay, leading to potential tooth discoloration or the need for root canal treatment. However, these cases are infrequent and can be assessed and monitored by our qualified orthodontists.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Treatment in Singapore

How often will I need to visit the dentist after my orthodontic treatment?

It is usually advisable to have your dental braces adjusted every month. However, we have many overseas patients who cannot see us each month. In this case, we can still proceed with the treatment but with adjustments at less frequent intervals. After the treatment is complete, we will encourage 6-monthly visits to our dental clinic in Singapore. This will allow us to:

  • Check that your teeth are not relapsing and that they are maintained in their new straightened positions
  • Check your retainers and clean them if necessary
  • Do a routine check-up and scale and polish to maintain your oral hygiene
Is installing braces painful?

In the first few weeks, the brackets and wire can rub against your lips and cheeks, causing irritation. We will provide you with a special “orthodontic pack” that contains specific ointments, gels and other effective methods of preventing such situations from arising and dealing with them when they do occur.Rest assured, however, that this is only the initial phase. After a few weeks, your mouth and soft tissue will get used to the brackets and wire, and further irritation is unlikely to occur.

How long will my orthodontic treatment last?

This will be dependent on your specific condition. Some orthodontic treatments can be completed within three months, while others can take up to 2 years. There are many different factors that can affect the treatment length, such as whether you need extractions and what specific conditions we are trying to correct. Our doctors will always accurately advise you on the length of your teeth straightening treatment before proceeding. Rest assured that we will adhere to the discussed timeline.

Will I need extractions?

Many factors determine whether you need extractions. Generally, teeth straightening treatments can be done without extractions. However, if our dentists feel that a better result can be obtained after tooth extraction, we will inform and explain the rationale in detail during your visit to our clinic. However, if you are still not eager to have teeth removed for braces, we will accurately show you the expected results without extractions, and you are free to decide on your preferred option. At Ashford, we always give our patients options to choose from and guide them with the best advice.Rest assured that if extractions are opted for, they are done carefully and gently and under local anaesthetic so you will not feel a thing.

Are braces covered by insurance in Singapore?

Insurance offers different levels of coverage for dental insurance plans. These include routine dental care like cleaning, consultation, fillings and x-rays, as well as major dental procedures like medically prescribed braces, dentures and gingivitis treatment. Typically, insurance plans that cover major dental procedures come with a higher premium, but it is useful coverage for those who need medically prescribed braces.

Is there a subsidy for braces in Singapore?

There are currently no subsidies for braces in Singapore.

Can I pay for braces by MediSave?

Braces cannot be paid for or claimed using MediSave. Only dental surgery for medical purposes can be claimed by MediSave.

Can I use the CHAS card for dental?

Certain dental services and procedures like consultation, scaling and polishing, extraction, and root canal treatment are covered by CHAS dental subsidy. The claims and subsidy amounts for each dental service or procedure varies according to the CHAS tiers. Braces are not covered by the CHAS card.

Can I use CPF for braces?

MediSave can be used for certain dental services and procedures like wisdom tooth surgery, dental implant, and gum surgery. Your dentist will better be able to advise if your dental treatment is eligible for MediSave. In the event that you have insufficient MediSave, you’re also able to use your immediate family member’s MediSave to pay for your dental treatment.

Can I play sports or musical instruments with braces?

Yes, you can still play sports and musical instruments while wearing braces. However, it’s essential to take some precautions to protect your braces and your mouth during these activities. For sports, it’s recommended to wear a mouthguard, especially for contact sports, to minimise the risk of injury to your teeth and braces. For musical instruments, it may take a little time to adjust to playing with braces, but most people adapt quickly. If you have any concerns, your orthodontist can provide specific guidance based on your individual needs.

Can adults get dental braces? Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?

Yes, adults can certainly get dental braces. Orthodontic treatment is not limited to children and teenagers; it is also suitable and effective for adults. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, age is not a barrier to getting braces. In fact, an increasing number of adults are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their smiles and correct dental issues. Whether you’re in your teens or well into adulthood, orthodontic treatment can be beneficial in achieving a straighter and healthier smile. Consult with an orthodontist to determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs.

At what age are braces most effective?

The best time to get braces is generally seen as early adolescence, which is typically between 10 and 14 years old. Preteens and younger teens have most of their permanent teeth and their jawbone tissue is still easily repositioned.

Which braces require less time?

Many individuals may be unaware, but clear aligners generally have a much quicker effect than braces. A clear aligner functions by exerting pressure on all teeth collectively, rather than individually like braces.

Can braces alter the shape of the face?

There are individuals who question whether the form of their face will alter with dental braces, and the brief response is affirmative — this holds true. Your body responds to braces moving your teeth, so your face shape may also alter in response.

Is it possible to clean your teeth with braces on?

Thoroughly tidy up the area surrounding wires and pins. Brush every wire: Go from top to bottom, and completely around both upper and lower teeth. Dental experts suggest brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. This indicates that every section of your mouth receives 30 seconds of attention.

Is it possible to kiss with braces?

Thanks to the improvements in contemporary braces, kissing while wearing braces is nothing to fret about. The tinier, sleeker components are less prone to catching on objects, such as another pair of braces or your partner’s lip.
