What is Aligner ?

Aligners are a modern orthodontic solution designed to straighten teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces, aligners are clear, removable, and custom-made for each patient. One of the most popular brands of clear aligners is Invisalign.

How Aligners Work

Aligners work by applying gentle, consistent pressure to teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position. A series of aligners is typically used, with each set worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next. This method ensures a controlled and predictable movement of teeth.

Benefits of Aligners

1. Aesthetic Appeal: Aligners are nearly invisible, making them a discreet option for teeth straightening compared to traditional metal braces.
2. Comfort: Made from smooth, medical-grade plastic, aligners are more comfortable as they do not have metal brackets or wires that can irritate the gums and cheeks.
3. Convenience: Aligners are removable, allowing for easy eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. This feature helps maintain better oral hygiene compared to fixed braces.
4. Predictable Results: The treatment is planned using digital imaging, which helps in visualizing the final outcome and ensuring more predictable results.

Effectiveness and Considerations

Aligners are effective for treating various orthodontic issues such as crowding, spacing, and some bite problems. However, they may not be suitable for severe cases, which might still require traditional braces or other orthodontic treatments.

Advantages of Invisalign

Determining the suitability for Invisalign treatment largely depends on the individual’s unique orthodontic needs and personal preferences. Here are some key points to consider that might help you understand if Invisalign could be the right choice for you:

  • Eligibility Criteria: Invisalign is a versatile orthodontic solution designed to address a wide range of dental alignment issues. Whether you have mild cases like minor crowding or spacing, or more complex issues like overbite, underbite, crossbite, or deep bite, Invisalign’s advanced technology makes it a viable option for many individuals seeking orthodontic treatment in Singapore.
  • Advantages for Specific Needs: If you are seeking an orthodontic treatment that offers discretion, comfort, and flexibility, Invisalign could be an excellent choice. Its virtually invisible aligners allow for a discreet treatment process. The removable nature of the aligners ensures no dietary restrictions, and the smooth, comfortable design eliminates the discomfort typically associated with traditional braces.
  • Complex Cases: Even with more complex orthodontic issues, Invisalign can often be the solution. Its custom-tailored treatment plans and advanced technology can address a wide array of dental alignment problems, ensuring that every patient can enjoy the benefits of a straight and healthy smile.
  • Patient Involvement: A key advantage of Invisalign is that it empowers patients to be involved in the treatment planning. With Invisalign’s 3D ClinCheck Pro® technology, you can review and make adjustments to the proposed treatment plan, ensuring a clear understanding and expectation of the final outcome, even before the treatment begins.

Invisalign vs Braces

Invisalign and traditional braces each have their own pros and cons. Invisalign offers a more discreet way to straighten teeth with clear, removable aligners, making it easier to maintain oral hygiene and eat without restrictions. However, they require discipline to wear consistently and may not be suitable for more complex dental issues. Traditional braces, on the other hand, are highly effective for a wide range of dental problems and do not rely on patient compliance as heavily, but they are more noticeable and can make oral hygiene and eating more challenging.

Invisible Braces

Invisible braces, commonly known as clear aligners, offer a discreet and effective alternative to traditional metal braces for orthodontic treatment. They are made from clear, medical-grade plastic, which makes them virtually invisible when worn. The most popular brand of clear aligners is Invisalign, though other brands also exist.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Invisible braces are nearly invisible, making them a popular choice for adults and teenagers who prefer a less noticeable orthodontic solution.
  • Comfort: Made from smooth plastic, clear aligners are generally more comfortable than traditional metal braces, with no wires or brackets to cause irritation.
  • Removability: Clear aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, which promotes better oral hygiene and fewer dietary restrictions.
  • Effectiveness: They are effective in treating a variety of dental issues, including overcrowding, gaps, and some bite problems. However, they might not be suitable for very complex cases.
  • Cost: The cost of invisible braces can vary but is generally higher than traditional braces. The exact cost depends on the complexity of the case and the duration of treatment.
  • Treatment Time: The treatment time can be shorter compared to traditional braces, but this depends on the specific orthodontic needs of the patient.

Invisalign Before and After

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are almost invisible, making them a popular choice for both adults and teenagers who want a more discreet orthodontic option. The treatment process involves wearing a new set of aligners every one to two weeks, which are custom-made based on a 3D scan of your teeth.

  • Initial Consultation: The first step is to consult with an orthodontist who will evaluate your teeth and determine if Invisalign is suitable for you. A 3D scan or impression of your teeth will be taken to create a customized treatment plan.
  • Customized Aligners: The Invisalign lab creates a series of aligners tailored to your specific dental structure. Each aligner gradually shifts your teeth into the desired position.
  • Wearing Aligners: Aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours a day, only removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Each set of aligners is typically worn for one to two weeks before moving to the next set.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: It is crucial to maintain proper hygiene by cleaning the aligners regularly using a special cleaning kit or a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Avoid using hot water as it can warp the plastic.
  • Regular Check-ups: Periodic visits to the orthodontist are necessary to monitor progress and make any needed adjustments. These appointments are typically scheduled every 6-8 weeks.
  • Results: The total treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case, but most patients complete treatment within 12 to 18 months. Post-treatment, a retainer is usually recommended to maintain the new position of the teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign Clinics in Singapore

Is Invisalign painful?

A significant advantage with Invisalign is the level of comfort throughout the process. There are no brackets and wire, so you do not feel anything pushing against your gums, lips or tongue. It is an entirely painless  process.

How long will my treatment last?

This will be dependent on your specific condition. Some Invisalign treatments take as little as ten weeks to achieve your dream smile. Others can take up to 12-14 months to achieve the desired result. One certainty is that as long as you wear your aligners, you will see great results in a relatively short time frame. You will also enjoy the process.

How exactly do aligners straighten my teeth?

Essentially, a clear aligner is made to fit on your teeth as they are right now. Then, one is made for the final position of your teeth. A few aligners will be made between the start and end of your treatment, correcting your teeth’s position a few millimetres at a time. This ensures that your teeth is not subjected to too much pressure, allowing them to remain healthy and strong. That said, keep in mind that we are changing the position of each tooth with every aligner you wear. As long as your aligners are worn constantly, there will be a constant but very light force on each tooth to move it into the desired position gradually. The number of aligners you need depends on how much straightening is required. It can be anywhere between 7 to 25 or 30 aligners. Each aligner is generally worn for two weeks. During those two weeks, your teeth will shift into the position predetermined for that particular aligner. Then, we will move on to the next aligner and so on until your teeth are in the final desired position shown to you during the initial 3D mockup.
