Sometimes I brush twice a day, use mouthwash and still notice a persistent bad smell from my mouth. It’s embarrassing, especially when talking to people and I’m starting to worry that something more serious may be going on. Why does bad breath keep coming back even after good brushing habits?

Chronic bad breath (halitosis) that persists even after brushing is usually caused by underlying issues such as gum disease, plaque buildup, dry mouth, trapped food between teeth, tonsil stones or untreated cavities. Brushing alone cannot remove bacteria hiding deep in the gums, on the tongue or between teeth. Medical conditions like sinus infections, gastric reflux or certain medications can also contribute to persistent odour. At Ashford Dental Centre, dentists perform a detailed oral examination to identify the exact cause—whether it’s gum infection, decayed teeth or oral bacteria imbalance—and provide targeted treatments such as professional cleaning, gum therapy, cavity treatment or halitosis management. Getting checked early ensures fresher breath, healthier gums and long-term confidence.
