Doctor, I’ve been having a persistent toothache that worsens when I eat or drink something hot or cold. Sometimes my tooth feels very sensitive and there’s occasional swelling around the gums. I’m worried it might be something serious and am not sure if I need a root canal.

At Ashford Dental Centre, we usually recommend a root canal when a tooth’s pulp is infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures or trauma. Signs include severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to temperature, gum swelling, and sometimes darkening of the tooth. A thorough examination, including X-rays, helps our dentists confirm if root canal treatment is necessary to save your tooth and prevent further infection.
