Sometimes the pain gets so intense at night that I can’t sleep, the throbbing becomes worse when I lie down and I feel completely helpless because clinics are closed. I just need something that can calm the pain until I can visit a dentist in the morning. What can I do right now to get relief?

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain at night, there are several ways to manage it temporarily before seeing a dentist:

1. Take over-the-counter pain relief – Medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation. Follow the recommended dosage instructions.
2. Apply a cold compress – Hold an ice pack or cold cloth on the outside of your cheek near the affected tooth for 10–15 minutes to numb pain and reduce swelling.
3. Elevate your head while sleeping – Keeping your head slightly raised can reduce blood pressure in the tooth and lessen throbbing pain.
4. Rinse with warm salt water – Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gently rinse to reduce bacteria and soothe irritated gums.
5. Avoid triggers – Stay away from very hot, cold or sugary foods that may worsen the pain.
6. Use temporary dental gels (if available) – Over-the-counter benzocaine gels can provide short-term relief for localized tooth pain.

Important: These measures only provide temporary relief. Persistent or severe tooth pain may indicate tooth decay, infection or abscess, which requires prompt professional treatment. At Ashford Dental Centre, our dentists provide same-day appointments to diagnose the cause and offer effective treatment such as fillings, root canal therapy, or other necessary procedures.
