If your tooth gets knocked out while playing sports, it can be shocking, painful and very stressful — especially if it happens suddenly during a game or practice. I’m worried about whether the tooth can be saved, how quickly I need to act, and what the right steps are before I reach a dentist. I want to know exactly what to do immediately so I don’t make the situation worse.
If your tooth is knocked out during sports, acting quickly can make a big difference in saving it.
Follow these steps:
1. Handle the tooth carefully – Hold it by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root, to avoid damaging the tissue.
2. Rinse gently – If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or saline. Avoid scrubbing or using soap.
3. Try to reposition it – If possible, place the tooth back into its socket and gently bite down on a clean cloth or gauze to hold it in place.
4. Keep it moist – If you can’t reinsert it, store the tooth in milk, saline or your saliva. Avoid water if possible.
5. Control bleeding – Apply gentle pressure with gauze to stop bleeding in the socket.
6. Seek emergency dental care immediately – Visit a dentist within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
At Ashford Dental Centre, our emergency dental team is experienced in avulsed tooth reimplantation and can provide immediate care to increase the chances of saving your tooth.
