I’ve recently noticed that my gums have suddenly become swollen, tender and uncomfortable, and I’m not sure if this is something normal or if I should be worried. The swelling appeared quickly and it’s causing discomfort while eating and brushing. I’m wondering whether sudden gum swelling is considered a dental emergency and if I need to see a dentist immediately.

Yes — sudden gum swelling can be a dental emergency, especially if it appears quickly, is painful or is accompanied by symptoms like fever, pus, bleeding or difficulty chewing. Sudden swelling may indicate an infection, gum abscess, impacted food or even an underlying tooth-related issue, all of which require prompt professional attention to prevent complications. At Ashford Dental Centre, our dentists prioritise urgent gum and dental issues, offering same-day appointments, gentle assessments and immediate treatment to relieve pain, control infection and protect your oral health. If you experience sudden gum swelling, it’s best not to wait — early intervention at Ashford ensures faster healing, fewer complications and long-term gum and tooth protection.
