I’ve heard about wisdom teeth, but I’m not sure when they should actually be removed. Some people get them taken out in their teens, while others keep them longer without any issues. I’m confused about the right age and whether removal is always necessary. I also want to understand if waiting too long can cause problems later.

Wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 17 to 25, and this is the most common period when we assess whether removal is needed. At Ashford Dental Centre, we do not recommend removal based on age alone, but based on X-ray findings and symptoms. If the wisdom teeth are impacted, growing at an angle, causing pain or affecting nearby teeth, early removal is usually advised.
In many cases, removal in the late teens or early twenties is easier because the roots are not fully developed yet. This often leads to faster healing and fewer complications compared to waiting later in life.
However, if the wisdom teeth are healthy, properly aligned and easy to clean, they can be left in place under regular monitoring.
Our dental surgeons will evaluate your condition carefully and recommend the safest timing for treatment based on your individual case.
